Many people associate the word “aloha' with hello, goodbye, or love. ... Aloha is an essence of being: love, peace, compassion, and a mutual understanding of respect. Aloha means living in harmony with the people and land around you with mercy, sympathy, grace, and kindness.
We can all agree that 2020 has been a right struggle bus - namely for all the healthcare workers who are fighting tirelessly to save lives; but to all small businesses and entrepreneurs, the uncertainty has been rather cruel.
In typical MeeBox tradition we do love to feature an Indie polish brand whenever we can. Working and featuring products from small business just like ourselves is important to us. Especially during ties like this where small business owners need our support more than ever, so please do consider shopping locally this Christmas season.
Drum roll please..... For the amazing Siána Scott, owner and founder of BEAU Polish. We invited BEAU to not only feature in our box but to create a unique polish colour for us!
BEAU was born from a Nail Tech that loves colour, with a vision is to bring what you love to life through super fun colour collections that you can really relate to. We had a little chat with Siána couldn't wait to share with you all what she had to say:
Please introduce yourself and tell us the main reason why you started Beau polish.
My name is Siána Founder of BEAU Polish. I am a consumer packaged goods designer in my day job, a qualified L2 Nail Technician and a level 5 going on level 6 violinist. I started BEAU because I strongly believe colour is a really great way to express yourself. I specialise in bolder and brighter colours simply because I believe that we all deserve to be seen. Nail polish and nail art is a great way to show your personality without needing to say anything, much like your fashion choices and hairstyles.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way.
If I said it was smooth I would be lying! But I am grateful for the struggle as I am learning a lot about business and about myself. In the past year I have grown in ways I never thought imaginable and for that I am very proud!
I launched my business around 5-6 months before the 1st national Covid-19 lockdown in the UK. In those months I relied heavily on face-to-face sales as that’s is where my expertise mostly lie, and neglected my online presence. Building that up has been a challenge but also a blessing because I was forced to focus on it and work out ways to get my brand out there. I also have a full time job that is very design focused and when the evening arrives my mind is tired from the days work, so I struggle sometimes to get my mind into gear after a long day. I appreciate that some may not have this privilege, but because of this, I have learnt to slow down and remember that it’s the ‘game’ of business that is the fun bit, and not to rush myself into decisions that don’t reflect my brand philosophy. I realised that I don’t need to do everything in the few hours I have before bed, but believe me I have tried!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would 100% have a more in depth approach to my online presence than I did. While I have no regrets with how I launched my business and the collection I launched it with, Covid taught me that face-to-face sales aren’t always to be relied on.
What is it about colour/s that sparks your creativity? Do you have a favourite colour and what can you tell us about it?
Many humans have the ability to see many colours. We, like all creatures, need light to survive. Light doesn’t just nourish us, light comes with a huge spectrum of possibilities in relation to colour. That is pretty cool when you think about it! It envelops our lives from street signs to branding, and it means so much more to us than some might give it credit for. Colour is important, and the colours that people choose I think says a lot about them. That is what sparks my creativity, giving other people the means in which to express themselves to the world.
The colour I created for the ‘Aloha’ box is very much in the spectrum of my favourite colours (because I cant just choose one). I love blue or a really incredibly bright and in your face green! My car is currently bright blue, and if I was to ever get a super car you bet it would be lime green! I suppose something about these colours remind me of summer, beautiful seas and beaches. For me, they are happy colours!
As a Violinist and nail varnish manufacturer do you have any tips or tricks to help people through this second lockdown we are facing?
Trying to find joy in the small things that happen in your day and make note of them. It’s a dark time for some of us and the simplest things that can be celebrated should be. If it’s taking a really relaxing shower, listening to the patter of rain on your window, or seeing a really beautiful flower on your walk, then take note of that moment of calm and/or joy and sit with that for a while.
For me I try to schedule time with my friends and family virtually. I love to play Dungeons & Dragons so I very much look forward to that. I also like to create a challenge for myself that can be measured and completed, like organising my draws or getting stuck into my hobbies. I will play my violin for a little bit or I will pick up that video game I haven’t completed, or simply brainstorm some new ideas for BEAU.
Amid all the drama that is 2020, what are some of the wins you can take from this year.
Having some of my best months of online sales was a good win for me, and all the lovely reviews! I have also brought a lot of processes in house, so that will save me money in the long run which I am super excited for! It also means I can go that little bit further with my personalised gifting.
With small businesses being hit the hardest during lockdown, what messaging would you like to give others and customers alike as we move into gifting season?
Definitely shop small. Cast your buying net wider to small independent businesses; there are so many directories for them now as well. Many small businesses like my own are a one person band, a lot of blood, sweat and tears goes into really giving you a great experience with your products. The small business owners that I have the privilege of knowing, including myself, really care and we work hard to give you the best quality we can.
